Labour
LABOUR
I was reading Psalm 107 and verses 11 and 12 stood out. I have read this Psalm before but, was never actually impacted by these verses until this week. These verses talk about rebelling against God’s words and spurning His counsel. It made me think of the days in which we live. We live in a culture that takes pride in rebelling against the words of God and we do that because we spurn His counsel. The Oxford Concise Dictionary defines spurn as follows: repel, push back with foot; reject with disdain, treat with contempt. So we live in a world that treats the words of God with contempt. We do this because we think we are wiser than God, if, we even believe that there is a God. We treat the word of God as words coming from a mentally inferior entity. We have become proud of our ability to reason and to think logically. So, even though we have no clue how life came to be we think we are wiser than the one who created life and therefore, spurn His counsel.
ThereĀ are consequences to this behaviour. There are always consequences, even if we don’t want to admit it. The consequence of this behaviour is labour or hard work. Mankind has rebelled and spurned God’s counsel from Adam to now. Even we believers who should want to agree with the words of God and welcome his counsel struggle with doing so. We have been trained to rebel and spurn and as a result we have labour and toil. And in case it hasn’t hit home yet, God never intended for us to labour and toil. That is part of the curse and not the blessing. So where are you? Participating in the curse or the blessing?
The only way that we can participate in the blessing is if we stop rebelling against the words of God and gladly receive His counsel. God meant for mankind to live in His rest where there is provision without having to labour and toil for it. Doing the work that God prepared in advance for us to do causes us to walk in provision. Rejecting His call and doing our own thing causes us to labour and toil. Are you doing what God has called you to do or are you doing hard labour? I would say that most of my life I was doing hard labour because I believed the lie “if it is to be, it is up to me”. Working on the chain gang is not an abundant life. I have found, since I have chosen to do the assignments that God has for me, my life has become more fulfilling. I pray that you will consider what you are doing and make any changes necessary for 2024.
