Exploring the Interconnectedness of Spirituality, Leadership and Business
I ended last month’s newsletter by stating that we should be getting our identity from who we are on the inside, who we were created to be and not who our family or culture fashioned us to be. I will continue with identity again this month.
If you have taken your identify from anyone or anything other that your creator you will be challenged to achieve your purpose. And, yes, I do believe that there is a creator of all that is visible and invisible, which would include mankind. I also believe that it is the creator who has gifted each person uniquely to fulfill His plan for planet earth. Ephesians 2:10 tells us that “we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before hand that we should walk in them.” (NKJV) You may say that you don’t believe in God, but your lack of belief in Him does not negate His existence. The demons believe in God and they tremble because they know what their final outcome is. Their rebellion had consequences and their knowledge of God and His ability to enforce those consequences causes them to tremble. Of course it makes sense that if you don’t believe in God you probably don’t believe in demons. But, lack of faith does not negate the reality of the spiritual realm and/or its impact on us. We didn’t fashion or make ourselves, God did. Psalm 139: 13 tells us that “God formed our inward parts. He covered us in our mother’s womb.” (NKJV) We did not create our abilities or giftings nor did they just come out of thin air. We may have worked on developing skills but our innate ability wasn’t by happenstance. They did not just somehow come to be?
Firstly, I would like to identify who mankind was created to be. We were created in God’s image to manage, steward what He, Father God, had created. He created us male and female to rule and reign over the works of His hands. Secondly, He also created us to commune and have relationship with Him. We were His children, His offspring. We were created to be His family. Our treason broke that line of communication, relationship and position of having dominion over the works of His hands. Our disobedience had consequences for us and the earth because we handed our position over to an evil entity. And, make no mistake, that entity doesn’t want us to know who we were created to be and what our purpose is according to the plan of God. The plan that the evil one has for mankind is to ensure that we never achieve the plan or purpose that God has for us. God still intends for His children to rule and reign in truth and righteousness. Understanding this is foundational in order to understand who we are and to achieve what God has for us.
We just celebrated Easter which recognizes the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is God in the flesh. Christ died for our rebellion and His being raised three days later signifies that the purpose of His dying was successful. He died so that God’s plan for mankind may be restored. So that we can take and hold the position that God Almighty intended us to have and hold throughout eternity: to steward the works of His hands. We are now able to live above this sin cursed earth to bring righteous and godly solutions to the planet. But this cannot happen if we don’t know who we are and why we are here.
Part of our identity is to commune with God. He created us to have fellowship with Him. Fellowship includes the sharing of ideas, companionship, having interests in common. This means that we were created to be able to speak to and to hear from God. We have all been assigned to do something. We all have our part to play in creating the vision or picture that Father God has for the earth and perhaps even the universe. In order to be able to fulfill our part we need to be able to hear the one who wrote our plan and purpose. We already referenced Eph 2:10 where it states that we are His workmanship. I like the way the Passion Translation puts it “We have become His poetry, a re-created people that will fulfill the destiny He has give each of us, for we are joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born, God planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it.” This verse makes it clear that God has written the story of our lives. That He has planned good works for us to complete before we were even born. And Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that God knows the plans that He has for us.
We are at a pivotal moment in world history and every human has a role to play. The question is whether we will fulfill God’s plans and purposes for our lives or will we fulfill the plans of the evil one who wants to steal, kill and destroy mankind. Having an understanding of who we are will help us make the decision that leads to life and a life well lived. If you don’t know what your giftings or abilities are may I suggest that you answer the following questions:
1. What things did you use to do and enjoy doing that for one reason or the other you no longer do?
2. Then ask yourself ‘why’ you no longer do those things.
Be honest with yourself as you answer the two questions above. Living your best life depends on your knowing this. A fulfilled life depends on knowing who you are and whose you are. Be careful whose mirror you look into to see who you are because you want to make sure that the mirror you use is giving a true reflection and not a distorted one.
