Exploring the Interconnectedness of Spirituality, Leadership and Business
This month I am continuing with why we are here. Last month I had indicated that this month I was going to identify how to determine our giftings and which areas may give us the most satisfaction. I won’t be doing that this month since I want to continue with identity because it is important to know who you are supposed to be. In the March/April newsletters I spoke about how our identity is determined by family, culture, etc. I also spoke about the need to go within to determine who we are. The rules or perspectives of our culture may dictate who we are but is that who we are supposed to be? You may be working as an engineer but were you supposed to be a musician? We can easily be moulded into an identity through people’s actions towards us and words spoken over or to us. But at some point we have to decide to embrace that identity. So, who have you decided to be and why? Have you based your decision on where you can make the most money or on what you are actually good at and not on what someone has suggested that you are good at?
I think we make decisions based on the benefits we receive such as: approval, position and prestige, money, the ability to make a difference, the ability to have options with how we want to live, etc. I guess Mazlow’s hierarchy of needs sums up why we make some decisions. It is interesting to note that surveys that have been done show that money is not at the top of the list as far as providing job satisfaction. And based on my travels some of the most joyfilled, generous and content people that I have met and worked with have been those in, so called, third world countries.
It is easier doing what is expected of you but are you satisfied with that? Does it give you a sense of fulfilment or are you still looking for something to satisfy? If the work that you are doing leaves you feeling ho-hum and you keep coming up with ideas of other things that you could do, maybe, just maybe, you are not doing what you are supposed to be doing. Which may mean that you are not being who you are supposed to be. I say this because the skills that we use and hone is who we become and how we are identified. If you develop your skills in the legal field then you’ll be known as a lawyer. But, are you supposed to be a lawyer?
If you feel that there is more that you should be doing I would suggest that you explore those other things, Make a list of all the thoughts/ideas that pop into your head as to what you could do and then rate them from 1 – 10 on the sense of contentment that it creates in you if you knew it couldn’t fail. Now you don’t know that it couldn’t fail but act like it couldn’t fail. Act like it’s a sure thing. If you are gainfully employed with a regular paycheque this may be a bit scary. But if you feel that there’s more for you, then you owe it to yourself to explore the more. Exploration isn’t quitting your job it is just doing some exploration. It may mean that you might start to re-define yourself and come up with a game plan that you believe is more aligned with who you are supposed to be. This may mean that you will have to learn some new things and unlearn some old ways of thinking and doing. It may mean that you take a risk and do something that you never ever thought you would be doing. I never imagined myself writing monthly newsletters, but here I am. And it does give me a sense of being on the right path. To exactly where, I am not sure, but I am on my path and that is what counts.
As you move out and connect and align yourself with who you are meant to be then you will find your voice. Your sphere of influence will increase and you will be able to make a difference in people’s lives, starting with your own. Not being who you were put on this earth to be and allowing social constructs to mould you into their idea of you, is living small. We were never meant to live small. We were never meant to go through this life and not continue to grow and expand our influence and impact for good. We need people to be who they are supposed to be so that the glory of God can be seen. Why do I say that? Because as you become and live who you are meant to be you will be fulfilling the plans that Almighty God had for you when He birthed you onto this planet. The plans that He has for us are good and they will benefit all those we come into contact with. None of the plans that He has for us will bring us harm. We are unique and there is no other person on the planet who has been gifted with what you have been gifted with. That means that there is no other person on the planet who can do what you do, the way you do it. No one can speak or write or paint or draw the way you do it. And what is within you is needed for the betterment and enjoyment of mankind. Choose to become who you were meant to be and let your light shine through the good works that you will do. Ultimately, that is our purpose. We are here to do the good works that have been written in our life book in heaven. Therefore, I pray that you will choose not to live small but to live large. God Bless.
